80% of Women Get Hot Flashes & 1 in 5 Women Will Get Alzheimer’s by Age 65

80% of Women Get Hot Flashes and Night Sweats During Perimenopause

According to Statista Research Departments, as of 2020, nearly half of women globally were unaware of perimenopause and were surprised when it started!

Facts

  • Suicide rates for women aged 45 to 54 (the most common age of perimenopause) have risen by 6% in the past 20 years, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

  • A survey done by "Health and Her" found that 86% of women going through perimenopause experienced mental health issues, and 9% had thoughts of suicide.

Explain

So, what is Perimenopause?

Is it different than Menopause?

Menopause is defined as the singular day you have gone exactly one year without a period (due to the natural decline of our reproductive hormones).

Perimenopause is defined as the time period during which your body makes the transition to menopause (the years preceding menopause).

It gets confusing because the majority of people use these terms interchangeably.

But for the most part when someone says "I'm going through menopause" they mean perimenopause because they are experiencing symptoms that are leading to menopause (that singular day of their life).

Perimenopause is marked by erratic fluctuations in estrogen and can last up to 10 years.

A woman can begin experiencing perimenopausal symptoms in her mid 30’s.

The amount of estrogen generated by the ovaries begins to erratically decline throughout your 30s and 40s.

Each woman’s perimenopausal experience is unique.

Some women have no perimenopause symptoms or simply a few minor symptoms, while others experience a wide range of symptoms that can be quite severe.

Symptoms may include:

  1. Hot Flashes
  2. Night Sweats
  3. Insomnia
  4. Weight Gain
  5. Increased Visceral/Belly Fat
  6. Hair Loss/Changes
  7. Memory Loss
  8. Brian Fog
  9. Vaginal And Bladder Problems
  10. Mood Shifts
  11. Mood Swings
  12. Impatience
  13. Increased Risk of Depression
  14. More symptoms are listed here

1 in 5 Women Will Get Alzheimer’s by Age 65

2/3 of all Americans with Alzheimer's are women!!

Alzheimer’s begins to develop in the brain 20-30 years before diagnosis.

2/3 of Alzheimer’s caregivers are also women, many of whom will have to take time off or resign from their jobs.

Facts

  • By 2060, approximately 13.8 million people in the U.S. will have Alzheimer’s, and millions more family members and friends will suffer alongside those diagnosed.

  • If Alzheimer’s runs in your family that does not necessarily mean you will get it. Conversely, if it does not run in your family, you are still at risk.

Explain

Alzheimer’s disease is NOT a natural part of aging.

Alzheimer’s disease is still
100% fatal.

There is no treatment or cure.

Of the top 10 causes of death in America, it is the only disease without any effective drug or course of action.

Healthy habits can prevent or slow the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. This includes diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes.

Alzheimer’s is the nation’s most expensive disease.

The cost of Alzheimer’s and other dementias to the United States’ economy is a staggering $355 billion, in health care, long-term care, and hospice.

Alzheimer’s is currently on track to bankrupt Medicaid.

And yet, Federal funding for Alzheimer’s research is about $3.1 billion a year, compared to about $6.6 billion for cancer and $3.8 billion for HIV/AIDS.

The expected cost of Alzheimer’s is projected to reach $1.1 trillion by 2050.

Costs for care far exceed other terminal illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.
The average total cost of care for a person with dementia over the last five years of their life is $287,038.

Menopause/perimenopause can cause many hormonal symptoms and women don't normally associate brain changes with menopause, but that is where it affects your body the most! Did you know that hot flashes are caused by the brain changes in menopause? I didn't either... until I read this book.
